July is BURN month in SGT!

It’s hot, it’s sweaty, it’s time to BURN it up at The Sweatshop! In our Small Group Training (SGT classes aka groups of 3-10 people working with a personal trainer) program, we alternate between 3 different types of exercise.

Burn – Cardio exercise is so important for building the strength of your heart, blood vessels and lungs. The stronger these are, the more efficient your body is at transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout its systems.

Blast – Using plyometric movements, agility training and exercises for flexibility, we work to improve balance, coordination, speed and skill.

Build – Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age. If you don’t do anything to replace it, your body fat will increase. Strength training improves bone density, controls your weight and boosts your stamina.

Each month our focus will shift from one of these main focuses to another. This will allow you to progress through your workouts and see measureable and real changes that will keep you excited and coming back!

Did you know that your heart is a muscle? It is, and it needs exercise to stay strong. Specifically, exercise that gets your heart rate up.

Imagine your heart like a six-cylinder engine: when it’s brand new it’s just waiting to put out that big roar of power. Then, for the next twenty years, you drive that motor with just two of the six cylinders,. The other four never move because you want to save fuel. That is, until you decide that after all that time you want to crank that old baby up again. How do you think those four long-neglected cylinders will react?

When you do cardio, your body’s cells need more oxygen and nutrients. To keep up with this demand, it will strengthen the delivery system bringing it to them: the lungs get  more capacity, the heart is able to pump more blood and the blood vessels are reinforced.

For your cells, this strengthened system means that they get more nutrients delivered all the time. Where before your cardiovascular network was like a maze of narrow side streets, it is now a bunch of wide lanes where no delivery trucks get stuck in.

Cardio can also reduce stress, ease depression, increase bone density and improve your sleep. So come get your burn on during July!

 

What is the TRX RIP Trainer?

By now most of you have heard of the TRX Suspension Trainer (if not check out a great video HERE) but have you heard of the RIP Trainer? Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not going to kill you. What it will do is give you killer results.

The RIP trainer employs an innovative resistance cord system to create a variable, unbalanced load that enables you to develop core strength, explosive power, flexibility and endurance. By attaching the resistance cord to an anchor and walking away from it, your body and the cord are creating an asymmetrical pull. The RIP is going to try to pull you in all kinds of directions, but you need to use your core the entire time to resist that pull. Everything we do in life is either creating or resisting rotation – so you can understand why the RIP trainer is an amazing functional training tool!

Welcome Home!

When I started out in fitness it was at this studio I used to drive by as a teenager. Driving past I’d see people in this big bright room doing aerobics (yup, aerobics!) and all kinds of crazy stuff. I always wondered what the classes were like. When I got out of college I was overweight and in a rut so I decided to come check the place out. It was taking this woman Jeanine’s BODYSTEP class that really changed my life. I loved moving to music with a group of people. There’s nothing else like the feeling you get taking a group fitness class. The members around you are doing the same thing you are and pushing you so much harder than you ever would go on your own. And then the whole time there’s an instructor at the front of the room that cares about you and wants you to succeed (and get a killer workout!). I was hooked and was asked to become an instructor. Years later in this same location I’ve started The Sweatshop and I couldn’t be happier to be back home.
